Right decision

I am writing on behalf of Manx Carers’ Association to applaud the decision recently taken by minsters Anderson and Robertshaw regarding the transfer of mental health services back to the Department of Health.

Manx Carers have long argued this was appropriate, and appreciate that whilst services users may not notice any changes, the concept of mental health issues will be much improved as a result. The silo mentality of departments has been long standing, and it is refreshing to see the minsters, Chris Corlett (CEO) and related professionals respond to public concerns via consultation.

We have always argued that mental health issues is a medical problem with social implications, and like other long-standing illnesses, requires care support and management in the community to establish effective recovery, and quality of life for those involved – this includes carers.

So in a time of recessions, difficult and painful decisions, thank you on behalf of our carers for consulting, listening and acting.

We appreciate we may not always agree, but when we do we wish to put on public record our appreciation.

Ravina Talbot

Chair,
