PEEL Secret Gardens once again turned out to be a success, with more than 1,000 people visiting the gardens.

Residents in the town opened up their gardens for the community to enjoy, charities benefited from the open days too as some homeowners sold light refreshments.

The weather was beautiful as 22 gardens with different themes were on show last weekend.

The hard work put into the gardens by owners was appreciated by visitors during the weekend, for the first time the allotments in Ballagyr Lane were included in the event.

Jenny Alford, chairman of Peel Secret Gardens committee, said: ‘It was fantastic, it went very well. In Peel we have the ideal place for secret spaces and want to show we have another dimension, an extra thing to see, an extra place. It is not a competition, everybody wins.

‘I am always amazed how well the gardens’ owners work so hard. I can’t praise them enough. The gardens are a reflection of the owner’s personality and lifestyle. The only thing that links the garden owners is the obvious love that goes in to it. The pleasure people get from their gardens is reflected. It is such a pleasure to be able to view.’

The event takes place every two years, Peel was the first town in the island to start the secret gardens, which began in 1996.
