Tom Howard in top form in Div Two

DESPITE an amazing innings from Ramsey’s Tom Howard, Cronkbourne B have narrowly avoided relegation from the Standard Bank Forrester Division Two.

The Douglas side started the game two points behind Valkyres B and soon found themselves put to the sword by Howard. The northern opener was in brilliant form, scoring 90 not out from his side’s total of 119.

He so dominated the innings that the next highest scoring batsman was Andy Ball with three. Despite all the mayhem, Cronkbourne bowler Chris Hewson shone with four overs for only four runs.

Needing to score at six an over, the Tromode team were indebted to a sparkling 54 from Ally Slack. Jonny Callow made 21 before being bowled by Dominic Howard who took 4 -18.

Cronkbourne reached the final over in sight of victory, but there were only two balls left when the winning runs were hit.

The victory put them on the same number of points as Valkyres and with the same record of wins.

It then all came down to the better run rate over the season. Both teams had negative figures.

Valkyres recorded minus 1.45 and Cronkbourne minus 1.34. A minute difference which keeps Cronkbourne in Division Two, but dooms Valkyres to Division Three next year.

l The island team has been announced for the ICC Europe Division Two Championships to be held in Greece next month. The squad, which is sponsored by Isle of Man Bank, will be skippered by Ricky Kniveton of Crosby.
