Under-17s head to Denmark

THE Isle of Man’s under-17 side flew to Denmark for the ICC Europe Division Two tournament on Sunday.

Two years ago the Manx won the cup when it was played on the island, but the format has been changed since then.

Under-17 Division One has the top Associate countries such as Ireland, Scotland and the Netherlands.

The second league consists of just Denmark, Italy and the Isle of Man while the third division has around a dozen teams in it.

The reasoning is that the Division Two sides are strong, of similar strength and a better competition will be had by them playing each other in an intense schedule.

The games will first be 50 overs a side, moving on the final day to two Twenty20 matches for each country.

This looks a very tough schedule for the island with both their opponents Associate countries who have built a fearsome reputation over the last few years.

On the other hand five of the Manx players were members of the squad which won in 2010. All the fixtures will be played on grass at the Svanholm ground in Copenhagen.

The Manx squad, which is sponsored by Isle of Man Bank, is: Rowan Bird, Adam McAuley, Sam Kebbell, Nathan Knights, Matt Ansell, Andrew Vels (Cronkbourne); Matthew Ogden, Ewan Quayle, Joe Burrows (Finch Hill; Seb Aycock, Jack Newbery, Brendan Coleman (Castletown); Nick White (Ramsey). The coach is Gareth Dawson with Phil Littlejohns as manager.
