Manxman claims fourth successive win in Paris

AFTER a fortnight carrying bottles and rain capes, the most decorated sprinter in the history of the Tour de France finally came out of the shadows to win two stages in the final three days of this year’s edition of the greatest cycling race in the world.

Victory in stage 18 at Brive la Gaillarde on Friday drew Manxman Mark Cavendish level with Frenchman Andre Darrigade on 22 wins, but another success 48 hours later on the final stage into Paris put Cav one clear of the great French sprinter to place him a clear fourth on the all-time list of stage winners.

Legendary Belgian Eddy Merckx remains top on 34, followed by Bernard Hinault on 28 and fellow Frenchman André Leducq on 25.
