MARK Cavendish suffered last-gasp disappointment in his quest to claim the red jersey at this year’s Giro d’Italia, missing out on the points classification by a single point to Spain’s Joaquin Rodriquez.

For much of the three-week long race it looked like the Manx Missile would complete the set of Grand Tour points jerseys having already won in the Tour de France and Vuelta a Espana.

However, despite leading by 29 points going into the final fews days of the tour following his second-place finish at the end of Thursday’s stage, Rodriguez’s third-place finish a day later meant that the Spaniard had to finish fifth or lower on Saturday.

Unfortunately for the Manxman, Rodriguez produced an epic effort late on to surge past Michele Scarponi within the final 200 metres to claim fourth, thus denying Cav the red jersey by just a single point.
