Heroic effort from Cav

MARK Cavendish produced a monumental effort during his last race in the rainbow jersey at the UCI 2012 World Road Race Championships on Sunday.

With the course set over 269km of tricky terrain through the Netherlands, it did not suit the Manxman but he performed admirably, setting the pace for well over 100km at the front of the peloton to help his team-mates in their bid to set up Jonathan Tiernan-Locke.Cav’s exertions eventually took their toll and, as expected, he dropped out along with Bradley Wiggins and Chris Froome.

Tiernan-Locke finished a superb 19th place as Phillipe Gilbert won overall.
