St Mary’s powerful defender Neil Brogan has been named as the Canada Life Premier League Player of the Month for December.

The dominant centre-back was in fine form for the Saints during their final few games of 2013, notably helping Sam Kenny’s side keep a clean sheet against fellow high-flyers Laxey in a 2-0 victory at the Bowl.

His performances in December garnered him a total of 5.5 points from Eric Clague’s player ratings panel.

Just half a point behind the former St George’s and Laxey player is Peel’s Marc Kelly who narrowly missed out on the monthly accolade.

The western midfielder proved to be the bane of both top flight northern clubs Ramsey and RYCOB in December. The playmaker grabbed a brace against Ramsey during a 4-1 win at Douglas Road and then also impressed during the Sunset City side’s 6-1 hammering of Youthie a week later.

As such he received five points for the final month of the year, meaning he was half a point ahead of team-mate Daniel Bell and Karl Clark of St Mary’s.

Bell continues to go from strength to strength alongside Kelly in the Peel midfield, netting in both of the westerners’ aforementioned matches in December, and he has now opened up a very healthy 6.5-point lead at the top of the overall season ratings.

Like Brogan, Clark has been a rock at the heart of the St Mary’s defence this season, a backline which has conceded just 13 goals in 16 league games so far - the second meanest defence in the top flight behind Geordies.

Clark’s performances have certainly not gone unnoticed and his 4.5 points for December mean he is now up to joint sixth place in the overall ratings alongside DHSOB’s Michael Hooper.

Just behind the top four are another quartet of players all level on four points apiece.

Oliver Blaker has been one of Youthie’s star performers throughout the campaign so far and stole the show again when he stunned Michael United with four goals in the northerners’ impressive 5-1 victory.

Blaker also netted against Peel and, as a result of these performances, has been named as the Canada Life Premier League Young Player of the Month for December.

Level on points with Blaker were Peel’s Lee Gale, Rushen skipper Aaron Hawley and St John’s Harry Rothwell.

Gale was in typically fine fettle for the westerners, netting twice against Ramsey to help cement his place in the top 10 overall this season.

While Rushen suffered defeats in both of their league games last month, Hawley was in good form for the Spaniards, grabbing a goal against Laxey at Glen Road.

Rothwell starred in midfield for St John’s last month as they recorded two impressive victories against DHSOB and Laxey which helped move the Mullen-e-Cloie side back into the top four.

Leading the refereeing rankings thus far this season are Peter Greenhill and Chris Taggart who both have an average rating of 79.4 points from five matches in the Canada Life Premier League.

Completing the current top three is Stuart Kneen with 78.86 from seven games.
