Douglas Royal lift Women’s FA Cup
CAPTAIN MARVEL: Kym Hicklin lifts the MBL Women's FA Cup at Laxey on Sunday
Ballafletcher outfit beat Ramsey 3-2 to land sixth FA Cup crown
DOUGLAS Royal beat Ramsey 3-2 to lift the MBL Financial Women’s FA Cup on Sunday at Laxey FC’s Glen Road ground.
Royal skipper Kym Hicklin put the favourites in front only to see the first-time finalists from the north peg their more illustrious opponents back through a speculative long-range effort from Allana Hall.
Hicklin added a second not long before half-time, but another spectacular strike from Ballacloan prodigy Hall ensured the two teams entered the interval level.
Some impressive stops from Ramsey’s island goalkeeper Elizabeth Stanley ensured Alan Corlett’s side remained in the tie until the 69th minute when prolific Royal markswoman Donna Shimmin netted a typical poacher’s effort to edge her side in front.
Shimmin’s 53rd goal of the campaign proved enough for Brian Cowin’s charges to close out the contest and win back the FA Cup crown they relinquished to fierce rivals and recently crowned women’s league champions Corinthians last season.
