Ellan Vannin’s dream run at the ConIFA World Football Cup came to a heart-breaking conclusion in Sweden on Sunday afternoon as they lost the final on penalties to the Countea de Nissa.

The two sides had already met in the 12-team competition’s group stages with the Manx winning 4-2. This time, however, the two sides couldn’t be separated in a scrappy and at a times tetchy encounter that ended 0-0.

With no extra-time, penalties were required to decide the inaugural World Football Cup champions, the Southern French region triumphing 5-3 on spot-kicks after Chris Bass Jr missed the islanders’ third attempt.

Second is still a fantastic result for the Manx who were 250-1 outsiders at the event’s onset.

More in Tuesday’s Examiner.
