Football stars help children Show Racism the Red Card
TACKLING THE ISSUE: Former Newcastle United defender Olivier Bernard (right) held a special session at the Bowl stadium last week to teach Manx youngsters how to tackle racism within football. ANTI-RACISM educational charity Show Racism the Red Card visited the Isle of Man again recently to teach budding young footballers how to combat racism.
For the past two years the organisation has visited the island and provided active sessions with children from several different primary schools, the police and the Isle of Man Football Association.
This year former Newcastle United defender Olivier Bernard and ex-Cardiff City winger Christian Roberts visited Peel Clothworkers and Kewaigue Primary, as well as holding a special session at the Bowl for children from various schools, arranged by the IoMFA.
Roberts said he was thrilled by the reception given to the guys in previous visits and this year was no different. The enthusiasm shown by the school children was inspiring and he was very appreciative of the continued sponsorship and help in arranging the visit by Barclays Private Clients.
Carl Lawrenson (Barclays) commented that the schools and the Isle of Man Football Association had been keen to invite SRRC again this year and wished to thank the IoMFA, Sefton Group and Flybe for their generous assistance in making the event possible.
IoMFA chief executive Frank Stennett echoed those sentiments: ‘This event has now taken place over the past three years and the important messages that are taught on the football field and in the classroom will not only help our own sport, but equally the overall island community.
‘From a football perspective, we want to ensure that any person wanting to play, officiate or participate in Manx football can enjoy the game in a safe and enjoyable environment.
‘On behalf of the Isle of Man FA I would sincerely thank Carl Lawrenson, Caroline Cornish and all at Barclays for their ongoing support for this important event.
‘It is great when there is such a keen desire to help the community and schools by all the companies involved who are willing to provide help to make these events possible.’
