Heavyweights do battle in Premier League

There is a reduced programme of fixtures across all four men’s divisions of Manx football this weekend, with just seven matches taking place around the island.

Despite this, there are still two cracking contests in the Canada Life Premier League, with St Mary’s v Laxey going head-to-head at the Bowl and DHSOB v Rushen United doing battle at Blackberry Lane.

Laxey are currently the nearest challengers to leaders St George’s at the top of the league and lie two points ahead of this weekend’s opponents, however the Saints do have a game in hand.

The Miners edged the reverse fixture in September when Johnny Callow and an own goal earned the Glen Road side a narrow 2-1 victory.

An equally close match should be in store again this time around, but St Mary’s home advantage should be enough to see them claim the points on offer.

Old Boys and Rushen also lie next to each other in the league table, with the Spaniards three points ahead in sixth place with both sides having played 14 games.

Likewise, playing at home could well swing the tie in DHSOB’s favour but Rushen will be desperate to bounce back from their 5-3 defeat at Laxey last time out and close the gap on fourth-place St John’s.

Sandwiched in between Rushen and the Johnners in the standings are Peel who face a potential banana skin at home to a resurgent Ramsey.

Widely predicted to battle relegation this season, the northerners have confounded the critics with wins against the likes of Corinthians and a stunning 5-1 victory away at high-flying St John’s.

However, Peel brushed them aside 4-0 in the reverse fixture and should have more than enough quality to ensure a similar result this weekend.

The only game in JCK Division Two on Saturday sees bottom-of-the-table Foxdale welcome Foxdale to Billy Goat Park. A win for the hosts would leapfrog them above Ronaldsway and also level on points with 11th-placed Pully.

Elsewhere, Union Mills face Rushen Utd in Canada Life Combination One at Garey Mooar while in JCK Combination Two Douglas and District visit Marown and Gymns welcome Douglas Royal to Tromode.
