Six is the magic number for two of the incumbents in the latest Isle of Man Newspapers’ Team of the Week.
Douglas High School Old Boys’ midfield anchor Michael Hooper and Union Mills’ wunderkind Joey Morling rack up their sixth TotW appearances of the season after impressing in Saturday’s round of Canada Life Premier League matches.
Hooper helped his side to a 5-0 win over Michael at Blackberry Lane on Saturday, Old Boys’ third league triumph on the trot.
Garey Mooar prodigy Morling’s fine season for the Millers hit another high point at the weekend as he hit a hat-trick as St John’s were beaten 4-1 at Mullen-e-Cloie.
Joining Morling up front is the youngster’s fellow Ellan Vannin squad-mate Andy Glover. The St Mary’s man continued his good form as the Saints triumphed 5-0 at bottom side Castletown, thanks in large to hat-trick from Steven Priestnal who also makes it into this week’s line-up.
Behind the potent looking front-three, Paul Rowley (Laxey), Jordan Kelly (Ramsey) and Craig Stewart (DHSOB) join Hooper in midfield.
Rowley played a key role as the Miners’ bounced back from back-to-back defeats at the hands of St George’s and Old Boys to beat RYCOB 5-1 and reignite their slim hopes of clinching the top-flight’s runners-up spot.
Junior island international Kelly pulled the strings as the northerners burst Corinthians’ recent bubble with a 3-1 win at Ballacloan.
Stewart marked his last Old Boys appearance before moving to Australia for a year with two goals against Michael as the Blackberry Lane outfit continued their end-of-season charge for a top-four place.
In defence Stewart’s Old Boys team-mate Martin King makes his second TotW after Wayne Kennedy’s men kept a sixth clean sheet in their last seven league and cup matches.
Alongside him Laxey skipper Gary Williams slots in at centre-back with Union Mills’ James Cannell completing a back three after he starred in the Millers’ fifth away triumph of the league campaign.
Ramsey’s Bulgarian keeper Kiril Velev claims the TotW’s gloves this week after the northerners continued their encouraging start to the year with a 3-1 defeat of Corinthians.
Securing the coveted Referee of the Week accolade for a third time this season is Gareth Jones who impressed in the middle during Union Mills’ 4-1 triumph in St John’s.
