THE Isle Of Man women’s football team has gone one step further than their bronze medal success of two years ago by reaching the finals of the NatWest 2011 Island Games.

The Manx defeated the Western Isles 4-0 in the semis at Newport FC and, in doing so, become the first British team to guarantee a silver medal.

In a match which Keith Lunt’s starlets dominated throughout, they took the lead courtesy of two Eleanor Gawne first half penalties. Sarah O’Reilly scored their third with Gillian Christian netting their fourth.

The men’s team, however, finished their disappointing NatWest Island Games campaign, losing on penalties to Menorca in the 7th/8th play-off match at Cowes.

The Spanish side took a two-goal into the interval but the Manx fought back with strikes from Conor Doyle on 62 minutes and Adam Cregeen in injury-time. The match went to a penalty shoot-out where Menorca triumphed.
