RYCOB defeat Union Mills 3-2 to pip opponents to promotion spot
RANSEY Youth Centre and Old Boys will be in Manx football top flight next season after a near 20 year absence.
The northerners beat promotion rivals Union Mills 3-2 last night to clinch the runner-up spot in JCK Division Two and Premier League football for the club in August.
The two sides’ rearranged fixture had spawned an accidental promotion play-off with the winner knowing they would join the Manx footballing elite.
Aiden Cummins edged the northerners ahead, Martyn Murphy’s free-kick doubling the home side’s advantage just shy of the half-hour mark.
However, Mills who had started the day in second battled back at the beginning of the second half and two goals in quick succession from Gareth Logan and Alex Suckling put them back in the promotion driving seat.
There was more drama to come, however, and in the 73rd minute Matty Boyd sent the home fans into raptures when he headed in what would turn out to be the winner.
Mills tried desperately to force another equaliser but Youthie held on to seal their first promotion in 17 years.
On Tuesday evening champions St John’s wrapped up their league campaign with a convincing 1-9 win over neighbours Foxdale.
On target for the 100 per centers were Silver Boot winner Stephen Glover (3), Andy Glover (2), Nick Hurt, Mike Peace, Ant Moore and Calum Gallagher.
