Birdie call for Ana
ENGLAND CALL: Peels Ana Dawson has been selected for the England Golfs Birdies northern squad
PEEL Golf Club’s Ana Dawson has been invited to be part of the England Golf Birdies northern squad at Formby Hall Golf Club in Southport.
On the back of doing well in the English Girls under-13s tournament at Delamere Forest, Cheshire in the summer, the youngster was asked to put her name forward for a skills testing day in York last month.
Of the 16 girls that were invited by England Golf, there were only six spots available on the Birdie 1 squad, which is the start of the England development system.
The girls were assessed on their swings, short game, attitude and a physical assesment. Being only 12 years old, Ana was one of the youngest girls there but it didn’t show as she more than held her own with the 40 other girls who were all trying to either get in or retain their relative squad groups from the previous year.
In all, 18 girls were selected into three squads, with Ana being chosen for Birdie 1. She will be travelling over to Formby Hall every month for training as well as continuing to work with the Lancashire Girls Golf Association training that she has been involved in for the last two years.
She is currently playing off a 9-handicap at Peel and is working hard to keep on improving.
As well as the training, Ana is also planning on playing in championships in Scotland and England next year to give her both experience and opportunity to keep progressing with her sport.
