Aces just hold on against Thompson
NETBALL league report from Sunday, September 23:
Absolute Scaffolding Aces 18
v Thompson Travel B 17
Absolute Aces got off to a flying start and looked dominant as the former Division One players went head-to-head with last year’s second division runners-up Thompson Travel B at the weekend.
Even with the wind, Aces’ movement flowed and feeds to the shooting duo, Shirley Ryzak (GS) and Penny Doran (GA) were converted to net them a quarter-time score of 9-2.
A reshuffle in the Thompson ranks proved successful as they began to take hold of the game in the second. The defence became stronger as GK Michelle O’Malley took charge and began to redress the balance by recapturing possession. Aces’ early advantage began to wane as Thompson steadily increased their goal count and, despite Absolute’s efforts, things just didn’t seem to be going their way.
A change around at half-time proved to be in vain as the northerners struggled to find form. Thompson’s confidence grew as they picked off some weak passes and timed their movement well but some repeated infringements returned the ball to the Aces hands.
Outdoor play definitely affected goal scoring ability on both sides, giving keepers O’Malley (Thompson) and Lindsey Plant (Absolute Aces), who had an excellent game, greater opportunities to defend the circle.
Plant was on form throughout, returning many a ball to her team-mates, but the Thompson girls kept a keen eye for potential interceptions.
Their GD and WD worked well to move the ball up the court to their shooters’ hands and were not disappointed as the Thompson shooters did their job.
It was all to play for in the dying moments as both teams fought for the final few goals. This game could have gone either way and, despite Absolute Aces’ confident start, they were lucky to hold on to the win as Thompson put in a very valiant effort, proving their strength in this division.
Players of the Match: Toria Newbolt (Absolute Scaffolding Aces); Michelle O’Malley (Thompson B).
