The Monday prior to Christmas proved to be a very enjoyable and successful one for 37 junior members at Albany when they played in the Christmas Fun Tennis event, organized by club coach Ian Watson.
Eight teams had at least one player from Red, Orange, Green and Yellow ball categories and they played their own category from another team.
The teams were named after Santa’s reindeer Rudolf, Blitsen, Comet, Prancer, Dancer, Dasher and Donner - teams also had to name the missing reindeer.
The Yellow ball player was team captain and was responsible for his team, handing in scores and selecting umpires for each match.
Because of the extremely wet weather, all matches were played indoors on mini Red courts using the 10-point tie-break.
All individual points scored counted towards the overall team result. After two rounds of matches, it was lunchtime and all players took part in a tennis quiz and word search.
Then there were four more rounds of matches to be completed. Everyone returned to the club room where the scores and competition results were announced.
The winning team was Team Dasher consisting of Kitty Thomas (red), Ben Clarke (orange), Luca Simmons (green) and Adam Pyatt-Coppell (yellow). The missing reindeer name was, of course, Vixen.
Each team was given a selection box kindly donated by Christine O’Hanlon - thank you Christine, no doubt they didn’t last very long!
Also a big thank you goes to Ian for organizing the event and everyone who helped.
This was not just a chance to play tennis and have fun, the children also learnt how to organize and be part of a team. Cheering your team players on always helps youngsters to bond.
A reminder - tennis coaching recommences on Monday, January 9 with the Yellow ball invitation squad, followed by the rest of the weekly programme.
