VAGABONDS returned home disappointed after finishing up on the wrong end of a 34-27 scoreline against Crewe and Nantwich in South Lancs and Cheshire Division Two on Saturday.
The home side fired out of the blocks and crossed first by scoring under the posts to lead 7-0.
Sure-sponsored Vagabonds responded with some scintillating rugby of their own where they ran in two quick-fire tries from flying wingers Steve Gawne and Sam Brennan.
Soon afterwards, Aiden O’Shea produced some magic with a cleverly executed chip-and-chase to score himself.
Leigh Kennaugh converted one of the three tries to put Vagas 17-7 up. Crucially, on the stroke of half-time, Sam Edwards crawled over for Crewe to leave the score 17-14 going into the break.
The heavier home pack kept the ball tight in the second half and used their dominance to control and keep the ball away from the Vagas backline.
Tries from Chris Vorster and Ross McCulloch kept the Manx side in the hunt right up until the death, but Crewe and Nantwich held on to take the win.
Vagabonds will now look to work on aspects which were poor at the weekend and look to build on their two bonus points picked up.
