With just a few games left in the Shimmin Wilson Manx Shield, second-place Douglas B have a chance to go top when they entertain Emerging Nomads at Port-e-Chee on Saturday.
Douglas are just a point adrift of leaders Southern Nomads who don’t play this week. Admittedly, Nomads have a game in hand right now but crucially they still have to play Douglas B and Vagabonds B which means Douglas still have a chance.
Emerging Nomads put in a strong first-half defensive showing against Vagabonds last weekend.
Dave Haywood was solid at fullback and scrum-half George Collister looks like a good prospect too.
Add in the abrasive Darren Birchall and the Nomads second string have some capable players. Douglas have, however, been very solid especially up front and may have one or two non-travelling first teamers to beef the team up too. I expect a Douglas win.
Elsewhere in the Shield, Vagabonds B head out west to meet Western Vikings.
The Peel men haven’t had a run out for a couple of weeks so should be well rested if a little short of sharpness.
Vagas, under the leadership of hat-trick man Kim Tomlinson were very profession last week and while it took them a while to wear down Emerging Nomads, once the defence was cracked, the floodgates opened.
I expect a similar sort of game here, with Vagas running away with it near the end.
