Swimmer takes silver at Youth Games in men’s 200m backstroke
SWIMMER Grant Halsall claimed the Isle of Man’s first ever Commonwealth Youth Games medal at the NSC pool on Friday evening.
Cheered on by a partisan home crowd Halsall landed silver in the men’s 200m backstroke in a time of 1:57.29 which was two 10ths of a second down on winner Corey Main from New Zealand. A further two 10ths down in the third was South Africa’s Christopher Van de Sande.
Elsewhere the island’s sole competitor in the Games’ boxing competition, Eddie Rennie, was stopped in the first round of his light welterweight quarter-final with Australia’s Daniel Lewis, while discus thrower Andrea De Bruin came seventh with a throw of 31.19 metres in her event at the NSC track. Gold was won by Australia’s Taylah Sengul with a monster effort of 50.71m.
