Joe blows time on his Manx rugby career
OFF TO SUNNY SPAIN: Whistle blower Joe Phelan officiated his last game on Manx soil at Port-e-Chee on Saturday
POPULAR Irishman Joe Phelan officiated his last game of Manx rugby in the all-local South Lancashire and Cheshire Division Two clash between Douglas and Ramsey at Port-e-Chee on Saturday.
He has been refereeing since the 1980s in senior men’s, women’s and schools rugby, also assisting with referee training and development, but is now heading to the warmer climes of southern Spain where he has already made plans to become a referees assessor in addition to officiating the odd game.
In the words of former Douglas coach, Paul Snellgrove, Joe played a superb final game. ‘It was a fitting end to his career here in the island. In my opinion, he didn’t make a wrong decision in what was a tense derby game. He controlled it superbly.’
Everyone in Manx rugby wishes Joe Phelan a happy future life.
