DOUBLES WINNERS: Matthew Keggen and Rachel Quirk with the Paddy Whelan Mixed Doubles Shield

Matthew Keggen and Rachel Quirk won their first mixed doubles competition together last Sunday at Peel as they lifted the Paddy Whelan Shield.

Both players were in tremendous form all day and they were especially good in the final as the clicked into top gear to beat Edward and Maureen Trustham 21-11.

In the semi-finals the eventual victors eliminated Sid and Lyn Bolton 21-13 while the Trusthams defeated Mike Hargraves and Harley Garrett 21-14.

Fallers at the quarter-final stage were Jim Corlett and Cath Parker, Ron Williams and Kath Kinley, George Monk and Jean Radcliffe and Colin and Chris Holland.

Festival Helpers Competitions

Both festival helpers competitions took place at the Villa Marina on Saturday afternoon.

Ron Williams of Castletown was victorious in the Alf Smith Shield with a 21-16 final victory over John Ruscoe of Noble’s Mixed.

In the semi-finals the winner took a great scalp beating home greener Stuart Garrett 21-14 while the eventual runner-up put out another home greener Roy Williams 21-16 at the same stage.

Losing quarter-finalists were Ken Williams, Thomas Rougvie, Alec Taylor and Alan Moore

In the Mary Alderson Shield for women, home greener Paula Garrett was victorious beating former team-mate and close friend Lyn Bolton of South Ramsey 21-19 after an extremely hard-fought final.

In the semis, Garrett knocked out Lyn Ruscoe 21-10 while Bolton put out Joyce Ogden 21-12.

Fallers at the quarter-final stage were Brenda Boyer, Jo Smith, Margaret Tasker and Rita Callister.

At the conclusion Jack Lee, Bowls Association president, thanked Douglas Bowling Club for the use of the green which was in good condition and also thanked those who had assisted during the competition and a special thanks to the Department of Tourism for their continued support.

The president then presented the shields and awards to the winners.
