Keith Gerrard produced a valiant effort up against some of the classiest athletes in the Commonwealth to finish 22nd in Friday evening’s men’s 10,000 metre final at Hampden Park.
Keeping pace with Kenyans, Ugandans, Canadians and Antipodeans for the first 3,600m he eventually had to ease back as the pace continued to rise.
In trackside temperatures in the high teens he eventually finished in a time of 29min 46.85sec.
Speaking afterwards, a disappointed Gerrard said: ‘I don’t want to make excuses, but I’ve been hampered by injury for some months and it was a late decision to race.’
