Kensington crowned champions

KENSINGTON Road B sealed the Division Three title in the PokerStars-sponsored Isle of Man Lawn Tennis Association Men’s Leagues last week.

The final home match for Kensington Road was a rearranged fixture against long-time table-topping Castletown D. The home side took an early lead with the Swann brothers, Stewart and Craig, beating Andy Johnstone and Yanchun Wang 6-1, 6-0.

Andy Varnom and David Emmett then came off having beaten their opposing pair, Eric Clague and Neil Macnair 6-3, 6-2. This meant the league was already sealed but Swann and Swann didn’t let up taking their next set 6-2 against Clague and Macnair.

Similarly, Varnom and Emmett took victory against Wang and Johnstone 6-1. Match result 6-0 to Kensington Road. This match brought a conclusion to all the men’s and women’s divisions.

Last week also saw the start of the Mixed League, again sponsored by PokerStars. In total 16 mixed teams have entered, each made up of two men and two women. There are six teams entered from Castletown, three from Albany as well as two each from Kensington Road, Ramsey and Port Erin.

Castletown E kicked off the mixed season with a home game in Division Three against Ramsey B. The latter proved to be just a bit too strong, though, with Michelle Simpson and David Stevenson taking two sets against John Taylor and Ilsa Reeves 6-4, 6-3 and a further set off Barbie Carter and Will Watterson 6-1. Cathy Tsitsos and Richard Simpson played well against Carter and Watterson to take two sets 6-2, 6-2 but Taylor and Reeves saved their best until last with a 7-5 victory over Tsitsos and Simpson. Match result 5-1 to Ramsey B.

In Mixed Division One the first of quite a few intra-club matches took place as Castletown have three mixed teams in Division One. The first of these to be played was Castletown C versus Castletown B. Laura Gardner and Neil Ronan were pushed hard by the C team’s Kirree Ronan and Brian Aram but battled through to take their first two sets 6-2, 6-4.

The B team partnership of Sarah Breed and Rob Mason also found it tough going against Mejeaan Brummer and Alan Macnair, but again it was the B team that came through 7-5, 6-3. Gardner and Ronan then took their next set 6-2 against Brummer and Macnair with Breed and Mason doing likewise beating Ronan and Aram 6-3. Match result 6-0 to Castletown B

Other results from weeks one and two were: Division One: Castletown B 6, Albany A 0 (W/O); Castletown A 6, Albany A 0 (W/O). Division Three: Port Erin A 3 (Simon Jones and Lynda Cadamy 1, Paul Allinson and Pat Crellin 2), Castletown E 3 (John Taylor and Rachel Charker 1, Bob Borland and Ilsa Reeves 2); Castletown E 1 (Andy McLarney and Carole Ennett 1), Albany C 5 (David Winnell and Sarah Wilton 2, Geoff Harris and Katie Harris 3). Division Four: Port Erin B 6 (Pat Crellin and Peter Shimmin 3, Althea Morris and Roy McLean 3), Castletown F 0; Port Erin B 4 (Tricia Taylor and Graham McFarlane 2, Pat Crellin and Roy Mclean 2) Kensington Road C 2 (Linda Faragher and David Emmett 2).
