Knight powers to hard-earned GNCC victory

DAVID Knight came from behind to claim victory in the third round of the US Grand National Cross Country series in Steele Creek Campground in Morganton, North Carolina, on Sunday.

A poor start saw the Ballaugh man round the first turn in last place - before he powered past the rest of the field and held off the challenge of Barry Hawk to claim victory by less than two minutes.

Knight said at the finish: 'I mashed up the start again. I caught up with Nate (Kanney, KTM Red Bull team-mate] and Barry, got around them and tried to open a gap, but then I hit a tree - so there went that gap.

'I just tried to use my head. The track was pretty fast and I was concerned with going over the bars again like at the last race. I had some people cheering for me out there though, and that helps.'

Reigning GNCC champion Knight stays at the head of the overall standings following this result, building on his opening round victory and a third place finish in round two.

The series moves on to Big Buck Farm in Union, South Carolina, next with round four taking place over the weekend of April 12-13.
