LDT proves a popular event

THE Isle of Man’s first long distance trial (LDT) proved successful on Sunday, when even the conditions were perfect.

The 100-mile plus route included some 15 observed sections and two special tests, one of which was an acceleration and braking test in true ISDT style. The event was organised by Richard Freeman in conjunction with Peveril MCC.

The marks lost were on observation, basically on sections marked out on the general going.

The route criss-crossed the island’s network of public rights of way tracks, lanes and greenways. Navigation was by road book, quite a skill in itself, issued at Knock Froy shortly before the 8am start.

World Enduro Championship riders David Knight, Danny and Jamie McCanney took part, Danny winning both of the special tests.

David, second overall, rode a 1981 250 SWM twinshock while elder sibling Juan was on the ex-Phil Readshaw 1975 ISDT Ossa Pioneer.

A total of 42 riders took part and the considerable interest in the event means that it is likely to grow with the idea of having a full-scale celebration of the 50th anniversary of the first ISDT to take place in the Isle of Man in 2015.

Thanks go to everyone who helped make the day the sucess that it was.
