YOUNG sailor Greg Kelly has been declared Young Sailor of the Year for the UK North West region by the Royal Yachting Association.
The Foxdale teenager has been recognised after a superb summer of results in which he won the RS Tera World Championship and the UK Inland Championship sailing as part of the Manx Youth Sailing Squad.
14-year-old Greg, who sails with the Isle of Man Yacht Club and recently qualified as an Assistant Dinghy Instructor, will recieve his award at the London boat show in January, along with 12 other regional winners from around the UK.
Commenting on the awards, The RYA’s chief executive officer Sarah Treseder said: ‘Winning an RYA regional young sailor of the year award is a huge achievement and this year we are delighted to see such a broad selection of winners.
‘We have youngsters who have given up their time and shown real dedication to their clubs, whilst others have achieved outstanding results out on the race course. All regional winners are a fantastic representation of youth in our sport”.
This winter Greg is training with the RS Tera GBR National Squad in preparation for the 2013 World Championship at the Olympic sailing venue in Weymouth next summer.
He has also teamed up with fellow Tera sailor George Catchpole to make the move into the RS Feva class on the UK circuit in 2013.
