No joy for Manx badminton youngsters

THERE was disappointment for the Isle of Man’s badminton players at the Commonwealth Youth Games on Friday.

In the men’s singles competition both Ben Li and Cameron Avery went out early. Li fell at the last 32 stage to Australia’s Eddie Hung after two close contests 20-22, 16-21 while Avery also went out in straight games as he lost to Rakhitha Perera of Sri Lanka 14-21, 13-21 in the last 64.

In the equivalent women’s event, Kayleigh Callow and Laura Beggs both received byes through the last 64 but lost to Scotland’s Kirsty Gilmour and India’s Pusarla Venkata Sinhdu respectively in the next round.

There was further disappointment in the doubles events as Li and Matthew Nicholson lost to Australia’s Hu-Wen Chew and Toby Wong in the last 16, while Beggs and Callow also fell at the same stage to Australia opposition in the form of Jacqueline Guan and Gronya Somerville.

Beggs and Nicholson then teamed up in the mixed double’s competition but lost out to the pairing of Josh Neil and Caitlin Pringle, while Avery and Callow fell to Matthew Chau and Somerville.
