Nomads into Plate final

PDMS Southern Nomads continued their Cheshire Plate defence with a powerful and efficient semi-final performance against a physical Oxton Parkonians side still smarting from their defeat at the same stage last season.

From the outset, the home side tried to use their size and aggression to gain the upper hand at the breakdown and set-piece, but Nomads matched and then bettered their attempts throughout. Ean Mousley, Rob Keelan and Dan Bridle stole or slowed down Parkonians ball all afternoon, which meant they were never allowed to gather enough momentum to trouble Nomads’ excellent defence.

The first half ended 0-13 to the Manx side thanks to a Gerard Landels try plus two penalties and a conversion from the excellent Mark Young.

Despite a strong headwind in the second half, Southern Nomads were able to keep their advantage and attacked Parkonians from all angles. The front five were now getting the better of their opposite numbers all round the pitch and the front row of Ally Kelly, Jack Sleight and Colin Kelly were making telling contributions.

Two tries were leaked in the second half from Danny Blyth and Liam Sadler after a series of penalties and unforced errors, but they weren’t enough to trouble Nomads in a match they controlled throughout. Further Nomads scores came from Mark Young, Ste McHugh and a second from Landels. Young adding two conversions.

Dave Horan and Conor Stephens were ‘men of the Match’ for their work in attack and defence. They were both the target of Parkonians big ball carriers, but they tackled heroically and consistently drove the opposition backwards.

The final score was a fair reflection of the match and was the result of a huge amount of effort and hard work. Southern Nomads will now contest a second successive Cheshire Plate final against either Ellesmere Port or Wallasey.
