The second round of the KHG Funds Senior Open took place at Ramsey Golf Club recently.

The event was sponsored by Boal & Co Pensions and started with a full field of 100 competitors taking to the course in breezy but sunny conditions.

Arriving competitors found Ramsey basked in sun and the course in great condition, although the rough was tough, keeping everyone honest. The early leader Rosemary O’Donohue found no problems with the rough and kept the ball in play all round, finishing with 36 points and led for the majority of the day. However after a rogue but short shower the wind eased and the afternoon players had the better of the day which was reflected in the scores.

Harold Faragher finished third on 37 points after carding 20 going out and 17 back, with a costly no-score on the 11th hole pushing him back into third place. In second place also on 37 points but beating Faragher on the back nine was Calvin Quayle who scored on every hole and crucially finished the back nine in 19 to secure the runner-up spot.

Seamus Nugent in the penultimate group cantered home on 40 points, out in 18 points with two no-scores and back in 22. Nugent likes to finish each nine with a birdie, a two on the 9th and a two on the 18th in front of the gathering crowd, a superb finish!

Boal and Co Pensions were the day sponsors for the Ramsey leg and provided the excellent prizes.

Director Mark Kiernan said: ‘It’s a pleasure to be involved in such a prestigious event, everyone enjoyed the good condition of the course and the weather at Ramsey helped towards an overall superb day”

Unlike Castletown, the women did not fair well in the podium prizes, but had their revenge on the spot prizes. The nearest the pin on 3rd hole, sponsored by Nationwide International, was won by Joy Phelan and the 18th, sponsored by SMP Partners, was won by Jasmine Heginbotham.

The race for the 2011 KHG Open Champion is getting tight with Nugent as the new leader closely followed by Heather McKenna and only 15 points separate the top 15 players.

The KHG Senior Open rolls into Peel on August 5 for the grand finale of the inaugural competition. A buffet will commence at 7pm with the prize presentation immediately afterwards. In addition, the organisers will promise a few extras to make the finale an extra special day.

The prize presentation for each day provided by the individual day sponsors and the spot prize winners will be followed by the presentation to the 2011 KHG Senior Champion.

The organisers would like to thank all the competitors so far in making the event such a success. Should you have any queries, contact either Debbie Gardiner or Gerald Bradley on 653800.
