PEEL'S CLUCAS LAPS AT 112MPH BUT IT COULD HAVE BEEN 117

PEEL'S Tom Clucas made a flying start to the 80th anniversary Manx Grand Prix practice with a lap of 112.79mph in Saturday evening's opening session, but later claimed he could have gone much quicker.

The ginger-haired Tom, who finished runner-up to Raymond Porter in last year's Newcomers race, was first away in the second session but soon caught up some of the slower newcomer and classic machines ahead of him.

He claimed that his actual time was 40 seconds longer than it need have been. 'I caught up the tail-end of the first session's riders and was flagged in on a short lap,' he said.

If that was deducted, it would have given him 19 minutes 24 seconds, an average speed over 117mph!
