Quine and Skinner take dramatic Rally Isle of Man honours

Manx pair triumph by 45 seconds after mechanical problems strip Nigel and Michaela Cannell of lead on last stage

STEVEN Quine and Richard Skinner won the Dukes Stages section of this weekend’s Rally Isle of Man in dramatic fashion on Saturday teatime.

The Manx pair took victory by 45 seconds after rally leaders Nigel and Michaela Cannell agonisingly dropped more than two half minutes in the day’s last two stages after a mechanical problem.

The Cannells themselves had enjoyed a rally-long battle with pre-event favourite Paul Bird only for the regular island visitor to crash his Ford Focus out of the three-day test this afternoon.

Ballasalla’s George Collister was third with co-driver Janet Craine to complete a Manx top three.

In the concurrently run Rallee Classicagh section Darren Moon and stand-in co-driver Dale Furniss secured victory in their Ford Escort Mk II. Ryan Barrett was second and day one leader David Stokes third.

The returning event had suffered two long delays during the third and final day of action after separate incidents on stages 20 and 23 which saw a competitor and a then a spectator taken to hospital.
