big win: Ramsey Bs Zach Claydon burshes off an Emerging Nomads tackle during Saturdays Shimmin Wilson Manx Shield encounter at Mooragh Park. The northerners won 97-14

Ramsey B claimed their first Shimmin Wilson Manx Shield victory of the season in fine style on Saturday beating Emerging Nomads 97-14 at Mooragh Park.

There were just five minutes on the clock when the scoring started.

Ramsey scrum-half Steve Cleator applying the finishing touch from close range after Nomads put themselves under pressure following a fluffed kick-off.

From the restart, the lead doubled. Bob Nicholson took the ball cleanly and fed it inside to Mark Oldfield.

Ramsey’s back row flyer sliced through the Nomads’ defence before offloading to Andy Cleator who went in for the try.

Matty Kelly converted and a shell shocked Nomads were 12-0 down before breaking into a sweat.

Nomads were given a glimmer of hope in the 13th minute when the marauding Oldfield was sin-binned for a high tackle.

That didn’t affect the Ramsey game though and they went further ahead.

Some great hands from Chris Hardisty put Matty Kelly clear down the left wing.

He put in a crossfield grubber towards the foot of the posts and when Ramsey reclaimed the ball from the ruck, Craig Harlick was on hand to finish it off.

Nomads did get their powerplay score a few minutes later.

Skipper Hugo McKenzie rallied his forwards and they kept the ball tight and drove into the Ramsey 22.

Two subsequent penalties were tapped quickly before second row Mark O’Brien smashed his way over the line. Pat Gandy converted and Nomads trailed 17-7.

Two quick tries just before half-time stifled the Nomads’ comeback.

The first from hooker Orry Watterson was a close-range tap penalty and the second was a Matty Kelly canter home after another big Oldfield break got his team behind the Nomads’ defence and left Ramsey ahead 31-7 at the break.

It isn’t clear whether Jim Lantry delivered the greatest half-time team talk ever, or McKenzie the worst.

What was clear, however, was Ramsey started the second half on fire.

It was more a damn burst than an open floodgate as the tries rained in for Ramsey.

Andy Cleator started it after Johnny Dean sent him clear.

Garry Vernon followed from a Cleator pass and as the Nomads’ heads dropped, Tom Moss and Oldfield both went in.

Wing Chris Hardisty got in on the action and he was backed up by Watterson with his second, Harlick for his second and veteran prop Dave Harding.

Steve Cleator bagged two quick tries right at the end to complete his hat-trick.

To their credit, Nomads kept scrapping to the very end and they had the final say of the afternoon when Jack Beard worked his way clear on the right for a consolation try converted by Gandy.

In the other Shimmin Wilson Shield game, reigning champions Southern Nomads went top of the table for the first time this season after a 59-0 win over Western Vikings at King William’s College.

The try machine that is Gerard Landels picked up another hat-trick to add to his burgeoning tally for the season.

Skipper Harry Brereton and stand in skipper Rob Keelan picked up two each with single scores coming from Duncan Miller and Jimmy Cubbon.

Miller also kicked seven conversions as the Vikings’ comeback came to a shuddering halt.
