Western Vikings win first game back in Shimmin Wilson, while Douglas beat Marple in South Lancashire and Cheshire Division Two

THE big story in the Shimmin Wilson Manx Shield was the comeback game for Western Vikings after a four year absence.

They didn’t disappoint and beat Emerging Nomads 27-17 in their first game since re-forming earlier this year.

Hooker Paul Wheeldon bagged Vikings’ opening try early in the first half and after Tony Grundy and skipper Mike Sheeley also added tries, they were comfortably ahead 17-3 at half-time.

Nomads’ points coming courtesy of a Duncan Miller penalty.

In the second half, Jack Collins pulled one back for Nomads and when Miller converted they were just a coverted try adrift at 17-10. Vikings turned the screw, however, and when Tony Quaye crashed in from close range and his try was converted by Mark Venables, Vikings were 27-10 in front with 10 to go.

Al Wilkinson’s late try for Nomads was little more than a consolation.

Elsewhere in the Shield, defending champions Southern Nomads thrashed Ramsey B 83-7 at Mooragh Park. The Landels brothers picked up seven tries between them. Gerard with a hat trick and Leon with a brace. Steve McHugh also weighed in with two tries, skipper Harry Brereton with four, Ian Hargreaves one and Tom Davies one. Mark Young kicked eight conversions. Ramsey’s consolation score came from prop Dave Harding and was converted by Garry Vernon. In the other Shield game Vagabonds B beat Douglas B 50-12 at Ballafletcher.
