Dave Christian rounds up the weekend’s rugby action

VAGABONDS lost out by the narrowest of margins as they went down 31-32 away at Bowdon in South Lancashire/Cheshire Division One.

The game was all square 17-17 at half time, with tries from Akkie Van Den Berg, Rob Martin and Ross McCulloch, plus a conversion from Jonny Beckley keeping them in touch. In the second half, however, they were unable to cling on for the win.

Ramsey thrash Trentham

Ramsey made light work of Trentham in their Division Two clash at the Mooragh Park running out easy 66-5 winners.

Nick McCudden, Lance Wyllie and Andy Cleator all crossed for tries in the opening half hour. Wyllie’s second on the half-hour mark gave them the try bonus point.

In the second half, there were further scores from Fintan Cummins, Shaun Wyllie, Will Keenan, Craig Long and a second from Nick McCudden as Ramsey avenged their away defeat at Trentham earlier in the season.

Douglas sneak past Wallasey

Douglas just edged out Wallasey at Port-e-Chee with the final score of the game giving them a 22-17 win.

The game was finely poised at half-time with Douglas leading 3-0 courtesy of a Tim Mitchell penalty. In the second half, Cark Markle-Ferns and Ragnar Tompere bagged tries for Douglas, both converted by Mitchell, before the former popped up with the winner in injury time.

Vagabonds Ladies lose at home

Vagabonds Ladies went down 42-15 at home to high-flying Morpeth at Ballafletcher.

Georgina Keyte, Diane Purvis, Kate Hall and Rachel Best all crossed for the visitors before Rachel Beckley pulled one back for Vagas leaving it 22-5 at half-time.

Vagas staged a mini revival early in the second half when Fran Hunt went over to reduce the deficit, but Morpeth pulled away and added tries from Jenny Hull, Heather Sherriff, Georgine Keyte’s and Elizabeth Severs. Fran Hunt bagged her second for Vagas but it was little more than a consolation.

Southern Nomads take charge in Shimmin Wilson Trophy

Manx Shield champions Southern Nomads underlined their credentials with a 31-10 win over Vagabonds B.

Two tries from Josh Samuels and one from Rob Keelan, all converted by Dave Horan gave Nomads a 21-10 half-time lead. In the second half Samuels bagged his hat trick and there was a further try from second row Pete Krecji.
