Three Manx sides begin South Lancashire/Cheshire Division Two campaigns

RAMSEY lost 18-13 at home against Ruskin Park in their opening game of the season in South Lancashire/Cheshire Division Two on Saturday.

The Manx side took the lead with an early Fintan Cummins penalty. The visitors levelled through Sean O’Hare and then took an 8-3 lead when centre Chris Halsall squeezed over out wide for a try. Just before half-time Ramsey hit back with a try from Ali Trace and a Cummins conversion gave them a slender 10-8 lead.

Ramsey prop Andy Wilson was sin binned for a late tackle early in the second half and Ruskin Park took advantage of the extra man with Ben Mousely diving in for a try which gave them the lead.

O’Hare added the extras for a five-point lead. A Cummins and O’Hare exchanged penalties in the closing stages, but Ramsey were unable to make any further inroads in miserable conditions. Ruskin Park hooker Paul Ledbetter was sent off for punching in the late stages of the game and will now face an RFU disciplinary hearing.

Vagabonds lose on the Road

Vagabonds too had a tough start to their season. They went down 34-27 away at newly promoted Crewe & Nantwich despite scoring five tries.

Sam Brennan and Aiden O’Shea both crossed for Vagas in the first half with Jonny Beckley converting one to give Vagas a 17-14 half-time lead.

Ross McCulloch and Chris Vorster both picked up second-half tries for Vagabonds but with Beckley having an off day with the boot missing four conversions and two penalties, Vagas were unable to push home their advantage.

Douglas fly the flag

It was left to Douglas to keep the Manx end up which they did in style winning 24-0 away at Ellesmere Port, picking up a winning bonus point in the process.

Will Latta was the star of the show for Douglas picking up a hat-trick of tries, two in the first half and one in the second. Tom Quayle also crossed for Douglas to secure the bonus point and Snellgrove added a second conversion to round off an impressive opening day performance.
