Successful Senior Open held at Albany

Have your say

The 2012 Albany Chrystals Senior Open tournament was a success and provided some very good matches for finals day over the weekend.

The men’s tableau final between Bill Harris and Marc Chinn was played on Saturday as Billy was leaving the island early Sunday to compete in Hungary. This was a fairly even match for the first set, with Marc playing probably some of his best tennis to date but Billy’s experience paid off and he won 7/5, 6/3.

The remaining finals were all played on Sunday with more spectators than usual, including some of our vice presidents and we were treated with some real battles.

The men’s group one final saw young Joe Harris eventually beat his dad, Geoff, in three sets.

The women’s final was another clash between island champion Laura Feely and many-times former island champion Karen Faragher. This proved to be an interesting contest with Faragher taking the first set before Feely raised her game to win by two sets to one.

There were two other finals, boys’ under-14 saw a win for Sean Drewry over Katie Harris, who played in the boys’ event as the u14 girls’ are too shy to compete!

The men’s group one consolation event was won by Calvin Smith.

Prizes were presented by Shane Magee on behalf of Chrystals Estate Agents. He congratulated the club and players on a successful event, some very good matches and confirmed that Chrystals would sponsor the 2013 event.

A splendid post presentation tea followed, which included birthday celebrations for Jay Skelcher-Maxwell (11).

Results: Mixed under-10s round robin winner Luca Simmons, runner-up Amelia Garrett; Boys u14 semi-finals: Sean Drewry bt Max Walker, Katie Harris bt Adam Pyatt-Coppell 7/5, 6/0. Final: Sean Drewry bt Katie Harris 6/0 6/1. Men’s group one: Joe Harris bt Geoff Harris 3/6, 6/4, 6/2. Group one consolation: Sean bt Alistair Breed 6/1, 6/1. Men’s tableau: Billy Harris bt Marc Chinn 7/5, 6/3. Women’s tableau: Laura Feely bt Karen Faragher 5/7, 6/0, 6/2.

Everyone agreed that using the old ratings format had made the event more enjoyable. The club thanks Ian Watson as referee, Sally Walker (tournament convenor), Tracy Simmons, Clare Skelcher, Jan Gaskill, Barbara Foley and all the umpires for the mini-tennis event.

It has been agreed that this event will be held later next year, after the exams are over and players are home from university.

The mini tennis programme will be held this weekend and then there will be a break until after TT.

Check with the coaches for all dates when sessions will re-commence.
