Thomas holds off chasing pack

Have your say

THE Tower Insurance-sponsored Monthly Medal was played in unseasonable balmy conditions at Rowany Golf Club on Sunday, resulting in plenty of people taking to the course, with some bare legs evident on show too.

In the silver division, the winner was former club president Dave Christian (11) with 68 points. Christian had a great back nine dropping only three shots, notably on all of the par-threes, but the rest were solid pars and good enough for the win.

Club secretary Kevin O’Loughlin (10) shared the second best score of 69 with Paul Thomas (12) and Tom Gandy (0) but unfortunately signed for the wrong score and was disqualified. Thomas had the edge on Gandy on countback despite a double bogey on the 10th. The latter was three-under thanks to an eagle on the 10th but a couple of dropped shots reduced that to one-under and a very impressive best gross of the day.

In the bronze division, Ken Moore (18) and Peter Baker (17) both shot 68 and were separated on countback with the honours going to Moore but best gross of the division going to Baker.

This round concluded the Graham Trophy and the leader going into the final round was Paul Thomas with a two-point lead. As suggested last week, the pressure of the chasing pack wouldn’t put him off and he coolly put in another solid performance for another seven points to secure the trophy.

This Sunday is a Turkey Shoot Greensome (which I’m going to look up how to play) until December’s monthly medal on December 4. Further news, results and reports are available on the website
