Western youngsters on course for champs glory

Have your say

The first round of the matchplay of the Appleby-sponsored Ladies’ Golf Association Island Championships took place at Douglas Golf Club course on Wednesday evening.

The weather was perfect and the course was as good as it has been for a long time thanks to the efforts of the groundsmen who have put in so much work over the past weeks.

Peel youngster Ana Dawson produced the result of the round when the 11-year-old defeated Ramsey’s Joy Morris 1up to progress to the next round.

Fellow Peel member Emma Harris, the defending champion, was first out playing against club-mate Mair Gardner, followed by the other top 16 competitors from Sunday’s two qualifying rounds.

There were some close and exciting matches with some excellent individual performances. Harris continued the defence of her title coming out 6 and 5 over Gardner, while Port St Mary’s Heather McKenna had a tough battle with club-mate Anne Gelling. The latter match needed an extra hole to decide the outcome, with McKenna emerging 1up from the 19th to progress.
