MARK Cavendish cemented his place in the top 10 all-time stage winners of the Tour de France with a superb sprint victory in Friday’s seventh stage.
The Manxman was perfectly delivered to the finish by his HTC Highroad team and, although, he was challenged by former team-mate and long-time rival André Greipel, Cav powered home to take maximum points.
The victory was particularly significant for the Manx Missile as it came in Châteauroux, the venue for Cavendish’s first ever Tour de France victory back in 2008.
However, the day was marred by a serious crash 36km from the end involving approximately 80 riders which left Britain’s Bradley Wiggins with a broken left collarbone, forcing the Team Sky podium hopeful to withdraw from this year’s race.
The win for Cav, along with his victory in the intermediate sprint late in Friday’s stage, moves him up to third in the standings in the race for the maillot vert, just 17 points off current green jersey holder Philippe Gilbert.
