Isle of Man TT Sidecar 2 race cancelled

THIS evening's Sidecar 2 event has been cancelled.

Organisers took the decision following an incident on the opening lap involving the race leaders.

Lap record holder Nick Crowe, 38, of Jurby, and passenger Mark Cox, 39, of Rochester, Kent, were airlifted to hospital following a crash at Ballacobb which saw their machine catch fire.

An official statement from the organisers later confirmed both men had suffered 'significant fractures' but that the pair had been speaking to medical staff and wanted to pass on their thanks to the marshals and medics who assisted at the scene of the incident and the staff at Noble's Hospital.

The race got under way on the stroke of 6.15pm following delays earlier in the day because of wet weather in the west of the Isle of Man.

However, the action was short-lived as the drivers were red flagged by marshals at around 6.30pm following the incident near the northwest coast, in the area approaching Ballaugh.

With the sidecar action now over for TT 2009, the next racing on the Mountain Course will be the TTXGP on Friday morning, followed by the six-lap Senior.

The practice session for Senior machines, scheduled to take place after the sidecar event, was cancelled soon after this evening's race was stopped.
