Rutter wins Macau GP
TT star Michael Rutter clinched a record-breaking eighth Macau Grand Prix title on Sunday.
A 24-hour delay to the race because of poor weather in the former Portuguese colony did little to knock the 40-year-old Midlander out of his stride as he brought home his SMT Honda 4.6 seconds ahead of runner-up Martin Jessopp. Third was Simon Andrews who made an impressive return to action on the Ice Valley BMW after a serious crash at this year’s TT.
Fourth came fellow Mountain Course regular Gary Johnson, with Austria’s Horst Saiger fifth just ahead of Ramsey’s Conor Cummins who brought home the Tyco Suzuki in sixth.
The Manxman finished one above TT icon John McGuinness, with Jimmy Storrar eighth. Cummins’s fellow Manxie Dan Kneen was a comendable ninth astride the Marks Bloom Suzuki. James Hillier completed the top 10.
The 59th running of motorsport festival was overshadowed by the deaths of Portuguese TT competitor Luis Carreira on Thursday (see page 83) and Hong Kong’s Phillip Yau, the latter losing his life in qualifying for the CTM Macau Touring Car Cup which was also held on the Guia street circuit this weekend.
