Morecambe Missile wins opening Superbike race of 2012 Festival
JOHN McGuinness secured an 18th TT win this afternoon when he swept to victory and a race record in the six-lap Dainese Superbike contest.
The Morecambe Missile was initially behind Cameron Donald after the Aussie set off at a blistering pace clocking his first official 130mph lap in the race’s opening circuit. However, McGuinness soon showed his mastery of the Mountain Course as he eked ahead of his rival before building a lead on his Honda TT Legends bike that would amount to 14 seconds at the finish.
Manx Kiwi Bruce Anstey pipped Guy Martin to the final podium place after he recovered from a slow start to steer home his Padgetts Honda 20 seconds ahead of the charismatic Tyco Suzuki man.
Gary Johnson finished fifth with William Dunlop sixth and James Hillier a good seventh. History maker Ian Hutchinson came home eighth on his return to the Mountain Course after missing the 2011 Festival through injury. Dean Harrison was an very impressive ninth in just his second year of racing at the TT, while Dan Kneen was first local home in 11th.
Fellow Manxman Conor Cummins didn’t start the race, deciding he wasn’t fit enough after struggling all week with a hand injury suffered in a crash at the recent North West 200. The Ramsey man does, however, hope to contest Monday’s races.
Racing continues at 2pm this afternoon with the first three-lap Sure Sidecar race of the week.
