THE world's first zero-emissions motorcyle race, TTXGP, took place over the 37.73-mile Mountain Course at the 2009 Isle of Man TT this morning.
And it was Rob Barber, riding the Team Agni machine, who will go into the record books and TT folklore as the first winner.
>> Click here to see video footage of the post-race press conference on YouTube'Absolutely fantastic,' was his reaction at the finish line of the ground-breaking event, after completing the one-lap race in 25 minutes 53.5 seconds, an average speed of 87.434mph.
XXL Racing's Thomas Schoenfelder took the runners up spot in the Pro class 3m 11.43s adrift while Mark Buckley, riding the Brammo machine, was third, a further 58s down.
Manx resident Chris Heath was initally delighted to secure victory in the Open class on board the Electric Motorsport machine, was later disqualified and then reinstated as the winner.
Heath's result was temporarily disregarded but organisers reinstated him as he was unaware riders must sound their horns when under yellow flags.
Chris Petty (Barefoot Motors) inherited the victory but was then moved back to second with John Crellin (TORK) third.
The spirit of determination behind the event was typified by an exhausted Steve Harper who completed the race in just under an hour, still aboard the the Brunel University X-team machine but paddling with his feet while crossing the finish line.
A total of 13 bikes made the startline as the flag dropped on the historic event at 10.45am, American rider Tom Montano (Mission Motors) leaving the Grandstand first.
Event promoter Azhar Hussain said: We've really changed the world today - and I thank the Isle of Man for allowing us to do it.'
