DOES the idea of a new arts festival, including art, film and music, excite you?
Would you like to get involved or do you have any ideas for such a venture?
Two Douglas friends have got their heads together to come up with the idea for an annual three-day festival to be staged late this summer, which incorporates all of the arts in the island.
But now they want you to come forward and, firstly, tell them if it is something you would like to see organised in the island, and secondly, to volunteer your ideas and services.
The brains behind the concept, actor and artist Rob Smith, 42, and events co-ordinator Ed Bunce, 27, are currently envisaging five venues and stages along North Quay with a whole array of classy acts, displays and screens plus street entertainment, stalls and a parade.
Rob said: ‘Festivals we’ve had so far have been quite specific but we want this to cater for everybody and for all ages – from eight to 80!’
‘So many of my mates are involved in the arts – in acting or music – and they all said we should have this kind of thing so I approached Ed and said people are asking for this.
‘But we are going to turn it back around and ask what the people want.’
The lads have already got support from the government and local businesses.
‘Anybody can get involved,’ continued Rob. ‘You can come and run a stall, display your art or help make the tea.
‘We need everyone from accountants and electricians to musicians and film makers.’
First, they are looking to set up a committee for which they also need members.
‘And we are hoping schools, groups and organisations will come forward too,’ said Ed. ‘We want to give a public stage to those who wouldn’t normally have access to one. The island can make this as big as it wants. We want it to be by the island, for the island.’
Rob said: ‘We want it to be a weekend packed with homegrown talent. We recognise just how much creativity and talent we have on the island and that’s what we are trying to promote.’
