The Courthouse bar in Athol Street in Douglas is to reopen as the New Courthouse – which will launch on Saturday, March 22.

The Courthouse was previously rebranded ‘Buddy Rocks Bar and Diner’ in October last year. But after failing to catch the imagination of the Manx public, it closed earlier this month.

Managing director Andy Hardy says: ‘After the Buddy’s concept basically did not hit the targets we wanted, I spoke to a lot of people and listened to what they said was missing.

‘We decided to bring back the Courthouse as they said they missed the glamour and style of the place, the fact that it was appealing to people from 18 to 80, the fact the food was all fresh and delicious and they loved the cocktails and the club.

‘In this trade, places tend to have a five-year shelf life before they need a freshen up.

‘In my opinion there were a large number of bars, restaurants and venues that were refitted and launched last year – the customer base had shrunk and we suffered because of this.

‘I mistakenly thought by doing something completely different and designing the Buddy’s concept that we could tap into the family food market early, then bring something new and different to the bar and club scene later in the evenings, that was keenly priced, relaxed and fun, then we might do well.

‘Basically you live and learn and I got it wrong, I won’t make that mistake again though, I genuinely believe that if we get the quality, glamour and style back to the Courthouse and make it somewhere really special again, price it very well so as to encourage repeat trade, and deliver a new and exciting food and drink offer, we can’t go wrong.

‘Buddy’s was a slap in the face for me and the team, we have things we needed to address and we have learnt from the experience. I still believe that we have the best design and location and there is a huge opportunity if we get this right – and I can guarantee the interior will blow people away.’

A new food direction will include deli/tapas style plates of meats and cheeses, healthy salads and classic British dishes. Acts already booked to perform include Utah Saints on March 28, Therapy on April 18 and Ben Gold on April 25.
