Nigel Dennis, a world-renowned sea kayaking explorer, is to give a talk on the development of modern sea kayaking through expeditions and journeys around the world.
Nigel started his kayaking career in 1980 when he circumnavigated Great Britain with Paul Caffyn. This expedition was the first successful circumnavigation of Scotland, Wales and England, taking 65 kayaking days.
Since then Nigel has carried out expeditions in Antarctica, Easter Island and a televised expedition around Cape Horn in 1992.
Nigel now designs kayaks, which he has manufactured since 1993.
Today his business Sea Kayaking UK is known throughout the world for its range of performance craft. As a member of Holyhead Lifeboat crew, Nigel has been a key player in sea safety education work carried out in conjunction with the RNLI in respect of sea kayaking.
Adventurous Experiences, the adventure sports centre based in the island, is a Sea Kayaking UK expedition centre and is hosting the visit as part of its annual Sea Kayak Symposium where Nigel will also be a guest coach.
The symposium, now in its 11th year attracts kayakers from around the world to the island and is sponsored by the Steam Packet.
Sea Kayaking UK sponsored kayaker Keirron Tastagh, who is director of adventurous experiences and was trained by Nigel, said: ‘We are extremely fortunate to have Nigel deliver on the island, and we are very grateful to the Isle of Man Steam Packet Company for their key sponsorship and support for our annual events that they have continued since their inception.’
The talk at the Claremont Hotel, Douglas at 7.30pm on Saturday, September 28, is open to members of the public for a donation on the door to the RNLI.
