'THANK you Dave ...' proclaimed Mississippi bluesman Boo Boo Davis during a storming set on Good Friday at the Pavilion Ballroom.
Despite the singer and harmonica player being accompanied by only drummer John Gerritse and electric guitarist Jan Mittendorp the band made an incredibly full sound and the groove was infectious.

Boo Boo and his band had been invited to play at the Netcetera sponsored launch of the 10th anniversary Bushy's Big Wheel Blues Festival and subsequently delivered one of my favourite performances in the festival's history.

It was fitting the evening was kick-started by the Big Wheel Blues Band — essentially the blues festival committee and friends.

They are all quality musicians and many have been stalwarts of the blues scene in the Island for some years.

Together they have helped organise the festival which is an essential part of the Island's music calendar and they certainly know their stuff when it comes to bringing over top talent to perform.

When Jonno Gollow sang Let The Good Times Roll, backed by his fellow committee members, it could be viewed as a welcome to this year's festival which takes place on May 2 and 3.

Boo Boo Davis is originally from Drew, Mississippi, and I had the chance to interview him just prior to his performance.

He recalled his days growing up in the southern state and his various musical experiences over the years including encounters with a young BB King. You can listen to the interview by clicking the green arrow on this page.

His performance — and that of his band — was spell-binding. As mentioned the groove was infectious, mesmerising even. My feet were still tapping after the gig has actually finished.

Boo Boo has a great voice and on occasions it reminded me of Howlin' Wolf –– at times spookily so. The guitar and drums locked in to such a wonderful rhythm and neither John or Jan missed a beat.

It was amazing how three musicians could make such a fantastic sound. But who was this 'Dave' that Boo Boo spoke so highly of and attributed his music to?

He pointed out from the stage that it wasn't Dave McLean, the keyboard player extraordinaire and blues festival committee member — though he was grateful to him too.

Instead 'Dave' turned out to be Boo Boo's word for Jesus. So thank Dave for Boo Boo's music and that of his band too!
