A weekly drag event at Mad Jack’s is bringing RuPaul’s Drag Race UK fans together for Thursday night viewing parties and live performances by Manx artists.
Hosted by local drag performer Fenella Beach (Owen Atkinson), the free events combine screenings of the latest episodes with entertainment from some of the island’s drag performers.
The series began in September and continues through October, with a special finale planned for November 5. It has attracted both regular supporters and newcomers.
Fenella previously organised Drag Race viewing parties at Moonlight on the Prom, but they ended when the venue closed in 2023.
After concentrating on other projects, Fenella decided the launch of the programme’s eighth UK series offered an opportunity to revive the events.
Having worked with Mad Jack’s for the past couple of years, Fenella said the venue welcomed the proposal.
‘I also always love when something gaggy happens in the episode and everyone reacts – a shock elimination, an amazing lip sync performance, an unexpected moment.
‘Watching Drag Race in a room full of girls, gays and theys is truly a top tier experience. Like when straight people watch sports in a pub, it’s just more fun with your community!’
Fenella said keeping admission free and the atmosphere informal was important, making it easier for people to attend without buying tickets.
Doors open at 7.30pm each Thursday, with the screening starting at 8pm, when the latest episode airs. The format offers viewers the chance to share the excitement of each episode rather than watching alone at home.
From the front of the room, Fenella provides commentary, invites reactions from the audience and asks viewers to rate the contestants’ outfits.
After a short interval, Fenella and a guest drag artist take to the stage for live performances, usually beginning around 9.30pm.
Fenella described the series as a ‘passion project’ and said the response had been encouraging.
Returning regulars have been joined by new faces, and Fenella makes time to speak to attendees during breaks to help them feel welcome. She said regulars and newcomers alike had helped create the welcoming atmosphere she wanted for the series.
Among the memorable performances was a rendition of Islands in the Stream by Fenella and fellow artist Nona Binary, which Fenella described as a tribute to Dolly Parton.
Audience reactions have also been a highlight, particularly during surprise eliminations, dramatic moments and standout lip-sync performances.
Fenella likened the experience to watching sport with fellow supporters in a pub, saying the shared enjoyment was central to the events’ appeal for the LGBTQ+ community.
Guest performers to date have included Nona Binary, Mathea, The Lady Isabella, Dahlia and Karmageddon.
Further guests are due to be announced for the November 5 finale.
Fenella said the final event would bring together a special group of performers and recommended it to anyone able to attend only one of the remaining evenings.
